Balai Rock Residents - Holy Week Diving 2013, Day 1 Balai Rock Residents – Holy Week Diving 2013, Day 1 – Balai Resort Anilao on Mar 28, 2013 @ 12:47Trying out my new INON lenses. This collage is of creatures found in Balai’s house reef, a steady slope, mostly sandy, and marked by a huge rock (aptly called Balai Rock) submerged at roughly 15 feet. This is my “go to” reef for trying out new gadgets because of its accesibility – an easy shore entry just in front of the resort – and abundance of fantastic creatures, big and small, waiting to be photographed and uber photogenic!

Scorpion fish Scorpion fish – Balai Resort Anilao on Mar 29, 2013 @ 05:50This scorpion fish was found in Sepok One, one of the fantastic reefs in Anilao, Batangas. It almost two feet long. The scorpion fish is a relative of the lion fish and has a powerful venom on its dorsal fin as one of its defense mechanisms. Its primary defense, however, is its ability to create a camouflage by blending in with its environment. I passed by this one and didn’t recognize it until a dive buddy pointed it out. They are quite docile and will remain frozen until it feels threatened, at which point it will just swim away, very quickly. This one posed for the camera but may have eventually gotten irritated with the flashlight. Gave me a fright when it suddenly moved at lightning speed to swim to a more secluded location. Shot this with an INON wide angle lens.

Caterpillar underwater Caterpillar underwater – Balai Resort Anilao on Mar 29, 2013 @ 05:51Fireworm is the more appropriate term for these caterpillar-looking creature. Never touch with your bare hands, if you see one, or you will get an excruciating burning sensation. Fireworms live under rocks, underwater, and can grow up to 10 inches long. The one on this photo is about 6 inches.

Coral Coral – Balai Resort Anilao on Mar 29, 2013 @ 05:52Interesting corals. They look like alien life forms and can be very pretty or very ugly, but alway make you wonder at their form.

They sting! They sting! – Balai Resort Anilao on Mar 29, 2013 @ 05:53
